How do you jumpstart a car?

Most people know the frustration and panic that comes when one gets into their car and it won’t start. You try everything. Break, clutch, changing gears, pushing it… but nothing works. Your battery is dead. A solution that not many are aware of how to perform but is a valuable tool is jump starting. Luckily this article will outline the basics of how to jump start your car’s dead battery.

So, how do you jump-start a car?

First, you will require some tools for the job. What you need:

  • A pair of working jump leads
  • The diagnosis is that your car battery is actually flat
  • Another car with a fully charged battery. That car’s battery must be the same voltage as yours. Avoid electric cars as they might cause damage to both vehicles.

That's the first step, to look for these things. If you don't have jump leads, you can ask the owner of the car that has a fully charged battery to assist you with theirs. You should always have your own just in case.

Step by step guide to safely jump start your car

  1. Line up both cars.

Since your car can't move at all, your Good Samaritan's car needs to be aligned with yours for the jump-starting process to begin.

Ensure the handbrakes are kept on and the ignitions are off.

  1. Take out your jumper cables

Use the red clip to connect the working battery positive terminal to the flat battery’ positive terminal too.

The black jump clip connects to the negative terminal of the working battery and the other end of a black clip to the earth point (unpainted metal) on your car that isn’t near the battery.

  1. Start the working vehicle and let the engine run for a few minutes
  2. Start your car

Turn the engine in the car that has a flat battery.  If it won’t start, make sure the cables are connected properly and have the working car running for five minutes and then start again.

  1. Let both cars run for a few minutes.
  2. Turn off and disconnect

Turn off the cars and carefully disconnect the cables. Remove the black clip from your car first then finish by removing the red clip from the other car.

  1. Restart your car

Turn your keys and see if your car starts.
